A small brick chapel sits on the edge of St. Mary’s lake on Notre Dame’s campus...

This project marks the beginning of my experience in architectural design. The simple program and understated form of a small woodland chapel was an ideal introduction into the process of design.

My decisions were driven by the materiality and character of buildings present on campus as well as the remote, scenic setting. The warm red brick is pierced by tall, accommodating windows crossed with patterns reminiscent of the forests surrounding the site. This project served as an important lesson in the way that light and setting interact with a free-standing structure.
